LamPetit wall or table lamp designed by Verner Panton for Louis Poulsen in 1966.
In the words of the original Louis Poulsen advertisment for the LamPetit published in 1966:
“Wherever you are with LamPetit, whether at home or travelling, you can have your own private little pool of light which won't bother anyone else. The idea is international, but truly Danish in design: simple, stylish, practical, robust. A foldable, portable table and wall lamp that can be rotated to any angle. A 12 volt bulb with two levels of intensity – concentrated white or warm, soft light. LamPetit takes up no room in a suitcase and is its own travel case. LamPetit is a reading lamp, work lamp, piano lamp, night light, hobby lamp, spotlight – whatever you want it to be!”
Did Verner Panton design Louis Poulsen’s versatile LamPetit? Certainly the compact little lamp is unexpected for its 1966 date, looking more like something from the 1980s with its blocky minimal lines and red-black-grey colour range, so you’d think it was designed by someone with an original approach. But the 1960s Poulsen adverts for the lamp did not specify a designer, so the LamPetit is often credited to the Louis Poulsen in-house design team. However, a Poulsen booklet published after Panton’s death reveals that it was in fact the work of the great man himself, listing the LamPetit together with other lights he designed for the company – the Flowerpot, the VP Kugle (VP Globe), the Europa and the Panthella.
